Pyrithione zinc properties description:

Zinc pyrithione forms an insoluble precipitate with cationic and non-ionic surfactants, which is unstable to light and oxidants, and to acids and bases at higher temperatures. It is not compatible with EDTA and is partially inactivated by non-ionic surfactants. Chelation or antichelation occurs in the presence of heavy metals, and these chelates are insoluble in water.

EEC and GB7916-87 stipulate that the maximum allowable concentration mass fraction of zinc pyrithione in cosmetics is 0.5%, which is only used in products that are washed off after use. A concentration of 250 to 1000mg/kg(active substance) can be used in gels, creams, lotions, powders and dandruff shampoos, as well as in deodorizing and disinfecting products. Zinc pyrithione is a chelate, which is a very effective anti-mold and anti-bacterial compound. Its anti-dandruff activity was discovered by accident in the mid-1960s, when P&G was exploring agents to control pityriasis infection. Recent experimental results have further proved the powerful effect of zinc pyrithione as an effective agent for the treatment of dandruff, but there are still some different views on the mechanism of action.
